The goal of the Little Hearts project is to enhance the quality of life for Ukrainian children deprived of parental care in orphanages and children’s homes.
To achieve this goal, it is necessary to address a number of persistent problems that significantly slow down the progress. Specifically, the development of this sector is impeded by:
As a result, the number of such institutions is gradually
ssi gradually decreasing, as is the number of people willing to devote themselves to caring for their children. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the situation has only worsened.
Subsequently, orphanages and children’s homes in Ukraine are now under immense pressure, exhausted resources and limited access to quality medical care.

MEDICAL MISSION
The Little Hearts project by FRIDA takes under its care the orphanages and children’s homes throughout Ukraine. Multi- profiled teams of volunteer doctors arrive to examine and determine the children’s needs for medications, vaccinations, rehabilitation and procedures.
Most often, during such missions, the team detects acute and chronic diseases, such as acute bronchitis and pneumonia, otitis media, tonsillitis, urinary system infections, protein and energy
deficiencies, deformities of the musculoskeletal system in the form of scoliosis, dislocations and subluxations of the hip joints, cerebral palsy, severe neurological diseases, etc.
Up to this point, we have already examined 1014 children in such facilities, ensuring that their immediate and future health needs are identified and addressed.

HOSPITALIZATION
OF LITTLE PATIENTS
Cooperation with the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Ohmatdyt”, Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No.7 and other state children’s hospitals in the region helps to cover the need for hospitalization of children free of charge.
Since the beginning of 2024, FRIDA’s volunteer doctors have diagnosed the children with the following conditions:
PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL
REHABILITATION
At least 20% of all children in orphanages and children’s homes have suffered severe psychological trauma and require therapy. Therefore, along with a team of doctors, psychologists visit these institutions to identify such children and subsequently provide them with weekly online therapy sessions.
Some of the children in these institutions have special needs.
During the medical missions, FRIDA physiotherapists develop a physical rehabilitation program for them, including exercises that can improve their ability to take care of themselves in the long term.
In particular, out of the 20 percent of the children who need assistance with exercises, 5 percent show a positive trend in muscle strengthening.
HUMANITARIAN AID
When volunteers visit children’s homes and orphanages, they
are struck by the poor conditions in which the children live, primarily due to a lack of proper funding and staff shortages.
While our primary focus is to attend to the children’s medical
needs, we cannot in good conscience ignore the conditions they
are forced to endure. Consequently, FRIDA Ukraine provides
those facilities with humanitarian aid, including household
appliances, food packages, clothing, school supplies, and toys, to improve their daily lives and well-being.
COMPREHENSIVE
APPROACH
The team of Ukrainian volunteer doctors in the mission
also includes foreign colleagues. These are specialists from the United States, Israel, Germany, and Poland. Thanks to such international teams, doctors have the opportunity to communicate with each other, share experiences, and find the most appropriate comprehensive solutions for treating young patients.

Now, all efforts are being focused on accelerating Ukraine’s victory. Unfortunately, this often means overlooking the most vulnerable – children and those with special needs.
We have ambitious plans to improve the living on conditions of children in Ukrainian orphanages and children’s homes. This includes enhancing the level of medical care and ensuring consistent support from society.
We urge you to pay attention to this critical issue and support the Little Hearts project. While we cannot replace the parental care that these young Ukrainians lack, nor shield them completely from harm, we can offer them profound care and attention.
